An Angel in the Dark of Night

An Angel in the Dark of Night

Up over the mountain
then down the wooded glen
wander I did aimlessly
on a path that had no end

All the while I thought to stay
a little closer to my home
I must have made a wrong turn
now I''m lost and all alone

The sun had set so long ago
without a moon tonight
the path grew even longer still
without an end in sight

the storm came out of nowhere
like a demon in the night
It came at me relentlessly
I fought with all my might

I weekended by the moment
yet the storm grew stronger still
try as I may to fight it off
I fear I''ve lost the will

Just before the world went black
I thought I saw a light
dancing through the darkness
then fading out of sight

I woke upon the rising sun
twas bright upon my eyes
took me but a moment then
before I realized

I lie upon a golden bed
with blankets piled high
beside me burned a fire well
that kept me warm and dry

Was then I thought I saw her
from the corner of my eye
she looked just like an angel
I wondered had I died

Just then the door burst open
Twas'' my father stepped inside
he looked at me relieved to see
that I was still alive

He looked around the room
as a tear fell from his eye
he told me of a maiden fair
he''d wanted for his bride

And how he held her close
on many a stormy night
right there upon the very bed
upon which now I lie

Long before I met your mother
when you were still a dream
seems like only yesterday
when first I heard her scream

She had fallen froma narrow ledge
just beyond the trees
lost to me forevermore
to the bottom of the sea

He told me of her kindness
and a heart so pure and true
skin so fair with golden hair
an angel through and through

I sat and smiled, thought a while
for I knew his words were true
then told him of the maiden fair
who helped me make it through

He wrapped his arms around me
as the cabin faded from our sight
nevermore to speak aloud
of that dark and stormy night

Nor the maiden fair with golden hair
whom surely saved my life
an angel in the darkened night
sent to guide me to the light.
