Sipping Lemonade

Sipping Lemonade

I walked along a winding trail
that I'd never walked before
I chanced upon a cottage there
so I knocked upon it's door

I saw the shadows flicker
and dance upon the wall
it was a woman walking
from a doorway down the hall

Her voice was sweet as honey
as she called out from within
“Who can it be that calls on me?”
“oh won't you please come in”

The hinges creaked and cracked
as I opened up the door
the room was filled with daisy's
from the ceiling to the floor

We must have talked for hours
While sipping lemonade
She smiled just like a child
Then offered cookies that she made

The day had passed so quickly
I must be on my way
She asked if I'd come back
I smiled and said "OK"

I wondered of this woman
She seemed a little strange
I didn't even realize
I'd never asked her name

A week went by before I found
The chance to go again
So I headed down the winding trail
In search of my new friend

When I approached the cottage
I saw an old man weeping
as he leaned upon the broom
on the front porch he was sweeping

He barely even noticed me
As I stood right by his side
With a hand upon his shoulder
I asked him why he cried

He spoke in tender loving tones
As he told me of his bride
He hung his head in sorrow
As he told me she had died

He pointed to a place upon
The hill beneath the trees
A small plot filled with daises
Dancing in the breeze

He said it was a year ago
Unto this very day
That he missed her dearly
Since she had passed away

I told him of the woman
And how we'd talked away the day
Then he offered me some cookies
Just like the ones she made

He shook his head then smiled
Leaning back into the shade
We must have talked for hours
While sipping lemonade
