Dead Men Walking

Dead Men Walking

They sway like leaves in the wind
Hearts unstable like a storm
Pain as sharp as a butcher’s knife
Tears unending like the stream
Broken men like shattered glass

Their song is dull, their cry sharp
Rich in debt yet poor in grace
Bless’d in grief, they curse with joy
Drunk on the beer of sorrow
And fattened by the flesh of pain

Held by chains they cannot break
Captive men but not by war
No blood shed, no flesh singed
But the heart which lies within
And sorrows deep within their dreams

A sorry sight when one does see
Lowly men such as these
Dead men walking as in a trance
Once full of vigour and with life
Killed by love, alive by chance.
