Once Upon a Time©
By: William Phenn

Once upon a time,
In a land not far away.
Lived a lonely fellow,
Who never had reason to pray.

But then one day,
In the vast reaches of space.
A beautiful woman,
He met face to face.

His heart leaped for joy,
When she said those three words,
“I love you” she whispered,
In tune with the birds.

Their love was ecstatic,
He was on cloud nine.
And life was a joy,
He was feeling so fine.

Then one dismal day,
In the course of his life.
He made a mistake,
And it cut like a knife.

He waited for her,
Outside of her work.
Not normal for him,
Just a cute little quirk.

Take her to dinner,
Those were his plans.
Ask her to marry,
As he held her hands.

But in the bright sunlight,
His dreams disappeared.
When he saw her old boyfriend,
From his car he appeared.

He stopped his advance,
With the pain of it all.
And dropped to his knees,
As his heart took the fall.

Eyes filled with tears,
He looked to the sky.
Screamed at the Heavens,
And kept asking, “Why”?

Blood stained the sidewalk,
As he stood there and then.
He pledged to the world,
He would not love again.
