Almost Called Your Name

Almost Called Your Name

We were sitting on the bank of the river James
and the wind was blowing softly through her hair
when my eyes beheld a vision of you
and I almost called your name.

I was adrift in the delight of us
and when my mind cleared
things went from bad to worse,
to a deep yearning to have you in my arms.

She was no match for the memory of you
as her lips came down on mine-
I almost called your name.

And just when I thought I had made it
and she lay nestled in my arms,
under the moon''s watchful eye,
your name rose up like a wave
drowning us in the truth.
