Leaving You Behind

Leaving You Behind

You came to me at the water’s edge
You asked “Can we still be friends?”
I calmly told you no (this can never be so)
What once was love can bind us no more
You were once the sun of my existence
Then you betrayed me (so now I’m free)
I turned and walked into the sun
The light engulfed me whole and bright
Turning my back on your cries (leaving behind your lies)
I walked into the sunlit realm
Where I found happiness and smiles
I never knew (my joy was not dependent on you)
I can be happy on my own
And I relish the feeling
No more do I drown (letting you pull me down)
With your shackles of love
Making false and empty promises
Until I can no longer see (your love is blinding me)
Those days are over and I’m not even sad
I have a laugh and a song on my lips
I thought I would die without you (but that was far from true)
Instead I live with love in my heart
Life is wonderful and you are not
