This is a love poem, in some respects; it is also a requiem, a riddle, and a call to action.

I am an endangered species
Governments have d d war
I am good for the environment
And can help to feed the poor.

I come in many colors
Red, yellow, gold and green
Religion tries to tell you
That I’m something obscene.

People used to see me
By highways, and by shores
But even if you’re searching
You can’t find me anymore.

I’ve made many people wealthy
By going underground
I’ve been known to make friends happy
Whenever I’m around.

Some people call me dangerous
But I give comfort to the ill
It’s because I am, myself, endangered;
That I’ve caused men to kill.

Who am I?
