The Hungry House

The Hungry House

Does your house
Eat things?
Mine does.

A book of stamps
And a set of car keys,
My favorite ones with a
John Deere tractor.

Today, all my
Business cards, well,
The ones that claim
I’m a writer and a poet.

House! What do you want?
You taunt and take.
You have a hold on me.

Why are you trying
To gobble up my name?
Do you know something
I don’t know?

And other things…just now
An earring. And a kid’s toy!

What’s the game
Oh, you hot-stuff house?
We all have our walls,
You know, to protect ourselves—
But, I thought we were friends!

Do you realize
YOU were built by US?
You with your silly door-mouths
And window-eyes?
Now you shut ME out!

Hungry house,
Please! Just tell me this:
How can I get you to love ME,
And return what’s mine?
