Just to let her know

Just to let her know

I lay awake at night
asking God what does it take
to make her see me
in just the right light
to understand me

I ask where should I stand
until she sees where I stand
and that I will stand there forever

I hold my weather worn spirit in my arms
my ragged and aged heart
still beating in my palms
as I bear it all
for her eyes only

And I stand there
with my less than glorious
naked body
as I slip under the quick paced feet
of our trodding community
and I try to be more
than a door mat

So I pen whispers of a calm
calculated love
to show her the world
has not beaten me into submission
without her

Not yet anyway

That I still have enough grit to fight
the demons that might otherwise
overwhelm a less sophisticated gentleman

And that is when I whisper Dear God
in my weakness to find more strength

It is not to beg for mercy anymore
from the constant onslaught that is given me

I want her to know
I know how to be an oak tree
in the lightning
and that the storm
does not scare me
as I root to be her shelter

Every tear she has
ever shed makes me want to be
a better man
for her

The best she has ever seen
in any life
and I am hers

And the harshest words
she will ever hear
spill from my lips
will always only be
I love you
