George Anderson Donald - Farewell My Love Part One

I opened my eyes, my sight is blurred,

She stands with her back towards me,

Cleaning a pot rusted with holes,

Her pinney, a sack tied with ribbon of old,

My love, I wish I could have provided you with more,

She stood in one room, unwashed, stained with mould,

Five children laying top to toe,

On floor as bare as Eve.

I see a memory of her eyes,

Lighting up the room,

Never before have I wanted her so,

She cries herself to sleep each night,

So tender are her tears,

That they mark her face through the grime,

I call out in vain, as I lay upon my bed of straw, straining to lift my soul,

A whisper, but she hears me....just,

Years of my voice etched in her mind,

She lays by my side,

I feel her breath on my face,

Her lips touching mine,

Salty from her tears,

I will miss you,

Farewell my love..................
