To be blunt

To be blunt

It was not long
before I knew
I was just your morbid fascination

A warmed over appetizer
wrapped in Styrofoam

As you cast your eyed off glances
over your shoulder like warning shots
across the bow of our innocence

Like you did not mean
to startle me like that
Like you did not know
what you were doing

As if those grazing shots had no chance
of bringing an instant death
to whatever they sunk their jaws into

So I named a star after you
but I lost it in the night

If we could find our freedom
Maybe together

I reached for your hand
across the crowded room
but your hand
did not reach back for mine
