On The Darkest Night

On The Darkest Night

Sun sets on his broken heart
and this slipknot noose on a night
he does not want to remember

It was another carnival ride
that made him sick
Overeducated and stuffed
on dumplings

It is a night he remembers her hand
slipped into his
Two arms cuddling in the dark
struck dumb as a stone by a stare

But behind her questioning eyes
there was love
even before a bottle of wine
is opened

A rose is a rose
but love has many petals
that connect to the roots
of the heart
and tearing them out
causes such a terrible scene

He shuts the blinds and fills the room
with smoke and terrible feelings

He sees the white light of the moon he wants to share
with someone

He never knew summer
would be so dark and cold
as he dares the tears to stain his face
like flood waters

He takes out her picture
fingering the print and heads
straight to the bottle

He remembers her cotton
Her satin
Her lace

He remembers the dreams they shared and the nightmare
life is without her
but he cannot remember why it is over
or the chill he feels
from her touch
