This is our first kiss

This is our first kiss

Only the lonely
cold whisper of night
keeps me now
tacked down to the earth;
To reality

And I have to sit on my hands
as she goes out with anyone but me
knowing full well I am everything
she needs

So tell me life''s fair

Tell me something complicated
like everything happens for a reason

Then tell me something easier to understand
like I am not the most beautiful man you can picture yourself with
and we are not really missing anything
by staying lonely

I will take a step back
because I am too close
for my eyes to focus
on the details
because I have been poor for so long
your guilt trips are my only vacations

The things you would not want me to miss out on
because you have always had everything
you wanted. So you give me
what help you can

I only cry outside your house
in the rain where no one will notice
how pathetic my tears really are

Or how when the clock strikes midnight
I will be a pumpkin again

But there are only two times a year
I truly need your love

My father''s birthday and the anniversary
of his death

Just hold me these two times
and remember who else would answer your call
at three in the morning

Just remember how I become
asthematic when you are away

As the dog star rises
to the dark tamborine
a melody is beat out in long
rhythms in the harsh terrain
that surrounds those cold
frozen mornings in New England

The threadbare forest stripped
just outside our window

And as my mind takes
its next vacation I wonder
could she ever have really
loved a man like me anyway

But it might just be me
who knows no one really wants
a romantic anymore
When we can be thrown away
like week old birthday cake
with no tarnishes on your conscience

So just keep my heart with you
because my whole body is rotten
like an apple after fall anyway

Picked over by cancer
while an old buzzard still tears
the carrion away as I try to slip into sleep
like a road flare

Brilliant but short lived

One more confession
before I turn myself into the dreams
of you that permeate my day

You remind me of someone
I never had before

You remind me that life
does not have to be
so empty

But I can hear you chain and lock your door
to keep me out

Arms length when we are near

When everything inside me
screams to touch you
