Never mattered
Never occured
Never needed
But I remembered

7 homeless shelters
9 schools
3 states
3 stepdads
13 step siblings
8 hits
9th birthday

Math never mattered
But the numbers
Numbers told my entire life
numbers defined my stories
You would think they don't matter
That something so simple...
could be so important

But I remember every bruise
I remember every scream
I remember every school
Every teacher
Every dad
Every sister
Every brother
Every birthday missed
Every christmas
I remember

7 Christmas' since I've heard from her
11 birthdays she never called
17 times I was alone
24 passwords for each shelter
1 mile to walk to the bus
20 dollars for dinner weekly

How odd to remember these small things
Yet...they mean so much
2 kids, 3 kids
1 wife, 4 wives
18 pregnant, 32 pregnant
numbers are in everyone's life
They unify us
They let us know we are all alike
That everyone has a number
To represent
To symbolize
What their stories are
When their stories happened
How many times it came
